This Victorian 1870s house is located in the historic town of Beacon, New York, where it is situated
between Mount Beacon and the Hudson River. The house once had many interesting exterior details that
rotted away over the years. We realized it would have been impossible to restore those details on a limited
budget.
After looking at pictures online, I decided the house might be reimagined in a 1900s English style. Many
cottages in England have simple door canopies in various styles. I settled on a “cottage” look, and
imagined that a well made front door overhang might transform the plain boxy appearance of the house.
The door canopy was designed using Timber Build parts while looking at UK examples. We resurfaced the
steps, and added new railings and an old style porch light. We have gotten many compliments from
neighbors and people walking by and we are very pleased with the result.
